What Is RPE?
Rate of Perceived Exertion, commonly abbreviated as RPE, is a standardized scale used to measure how hard a person feels they are working during physical activity. Rather than relying on heart rate monitors, pace trackers, or other devices, RPE asks a simple question: How difficult does this feel right now?
The most widely referenced version is the Borg RPE Scale, developed by Swedish researcher Gunnar Borg. The original version runs from 6 to 20, loosely calibrated so that multiplying the number by 10 approximates heart rate in beats per minute for a healthy adult. A simpler adaptation — the 0–10 RPE scale — is more commonly used today in fitness and clinical settings because it is more intuitive. On this scale, 0 represents no exertion at all, and 10 represents the absolute maximum effort a person can sustain.
RPE is a subjective measure, meaning it reflects your personal experience rather than an objective physiological reading. - 0–1 (Rest to Very Light): Minimal effort. Slow walking, gentle stretching, or everyday movement.
- 2–3 (Light): Easy, comfortable activity. You can hold a full conversation without any difficulty. This zone is often used for warm-ups and cool-downs.
- 4–5 (Moderate): Noticeably increased effort. Breathing is deeper but conversation is still possible in short sentences. A sustainable aerobic zone for many fitness goals.
- 6–7 (Hard): Breathing is challenging. Speaking in full sentences feels uncomfortable. This level typically corresponds to tempo runs or sustained strength sets.
- 8–9 (Very Hard): Near-maximal effort. Brief phrases only. This zone is used for high-intensity intervals and is difficult to sustain for more than short bursts.
- 10 (Maximum): All-out exertion. Unsustainable beyond a few seconds. Reserved for true sprint efforts or maximal strength attempts.
Most structured fitness programs blend across these zones rather than training exclusively at one intensity.
